Sacral chordoma – a report of two cases

چکیده
Chordoma is a rare, slow growing but locally aggressive malignant tumor derived from primitive notochordal elements, and it is usually found in the sacrococcygeal area. Chordomas are difficult to excise completely because preservation of sacral stability and sacral nerve pathways to the rectum and bladder limit the extent of surgery. The role of adjuvant treatment is uncertain and surgery remains the mainstay of its treatment. We present two such cases of sacral chordomas managed in our hospital. The clinical implications of these rare tumors are discussed.

Cutaneous Metastasis from Sacral Chordoma: A Case Report
Chordoma is a malignant, slow growing and locally aggressive tumor. It arises from remnants of the notochord and accounts for 1–4% of all primary bone tumors. They usually arise from anywhere along the spine, from base of the skull to the sacrococcygeal area and usually do not metastasize. Chordomas are slow-growing tumors which are not responsive to conventional chemotherapy or radiation. They...

متن کاملMetastatic Chordoma: Report of the Two Cases and Review of the Literature.
Chordomas are rare malignant bone tumours with a predilection for the axial skeleton, especially the sacrum and skull base. Median survival in patients with metastatic disease is usually dismal. Treatment is challenging due to the propensity for local recurrence, metastatic disease as well as lack of clear consensus regarding the optimal management. Our case report highlights two cases of sacra...

Sacral chordomas represent more than 50% of all sacral tumors. These slow-growing, malignant lesions present insidiously and are often large and intimately involved with sacral neurovascular and pelvic structures. En bloc resection is the only well-established predictor of progression-free survival. Optimal surgical management requires a complex multi-disciplinary approach. Here, we describe tw...

Two cases of sacral chordoma in a 7-year, 9-month-old boy and a 3-year, 4-month-old boy are presented. In addition to the typical histology of conventional chordoma, both tumors showed the less differentiated sarcomatoid appearance of atypical chordoma in the major portion. Immunohistochemically, in both cases neoplastic cells in areas of conventional as well as atypical chordoma were positive ...
